During the hot season in Mazatlán, there's a drink that both tourists and locals seek in the city streets to refresh themselves and regain a bit of energy; it's the traditional tejuino, a beverage that has been part of the history of the northern part of the country since ancient times and continues to be a favorite among the people of Mazatlán.
Tejuino or tesgüino comes from Nahuatl "tecuin," which means "Heartbeat." It's a corn beer that originated in various ethnic groups in Mexico and is currently consumed in various states of the country such as Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, and Nayarit. In Mazatlán, this beverage is highly sought after to beat the heat because its ingredients make it refreshing from the very first sip.
In Mazatlán, it is prepared with salt, lime, and carbonato, to which Tejuino concentrate is added, along with ice, to prepare this refreshing beverage that acts like a hydrating serum to keep you hydrated due to the high temperatures that can be felt in the port.
