Plazuela Zaragoza

Plazuela Zaragoza

Plazuela Zaragoza was built in honor of General Ignacio Zaragoza, a republican military leader who courageously led Mexican forces to defeat the French interventionist army in the Battle of Puebla. In October 1862, the state government issued a decree to honor the deceased General Ignacio Zaragoza.
As a just tribute of gratitude and recognition for the eminent services rendered to the Nation, the Plaza of the Old Port of the city of Mazatlán shall henceforth be named Zaragoza.
This plaza was constructed in 1954 on a property that was originally gifted by the affluent Filipino merchant Juan Nepomuceno Machado to his assistant Juan Guzmán. Guzmán, in turn, donated it to the Municipal Government to become the present-day plaza.
