Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

In the heart of the Historic Center of Mazatlán stands, proudly and majestically, the most outstanding work of our 19th-century architecture, the Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Built between 1855 and 1894, it was consecrated as a basilica on December 12, 1941.
It was consecrated on December 12, 1941.
The cathedral was conceived in three styles popular in the late 19th century: neo-Gothic, baroque, and neoclassical. Its consecration took place on December 12, 1941. Pope John XXIII, "the Good Pope," designated it as the episcopal seat of Mazatlán in 1958.
The cathedral as a whole is a construction that combines features that make it majestic. Its architectural design and ornamental details are unique and of indisputable quality. One need only look at the fourteen European (possibly Italian) sculptures placed on the side walls, representing the Stations of the Cross, or enjoy the exquisite images of Saint John Bosco, Saint Jude Thaddeus, Our Lady of Fatima, Saint Hedwig, Our Lady of the Lightning, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of the Child Jesus, Saint Martha, Jesus the Nazarene, Saint Dominic, Christ the King, the Sorrowful Virgin Mary, and the glass dome featuring the Holy Burial of Jesus.
Conceived in three styles: Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical
Noteworthy is its enormous central chandelier as well as those placed along the side aisles, profusely adorned with fine French cut glass installed in the year 1950. However, the jewel of the cathedral is its grand organ, built in Paris by the manufacturer Aristide Cavaillie-Coll (1811-1899). Although the cathedral's archives do not specify the date when this marvelous musical instrument was acquired, newspaper reports from the time indicate that on May 17, 1899, the organ was played for the first time, delighting the Catholic society of the port.
Did you know?
The first public mass was celebrated on May 7, 1880, but it wasn't until May 7, 1899, that the church was consecrated and the various interior altars were blessed. The ceremony was attended by some of the most prominent families in the city as godparents.
