Ángela Peralta Theater’s Architecture
Teatro Ángela Peralta boasts an imposing façade with Corinthian columns framing the main entrance. Its symmetrical design and ornamental details give a sense of grandeur and elegance. On the frontispiece, a relief representing the muses of music and dance can be seen, paying homage to the performing arts.
The building has witnessed the different eras the port has gone through, highlighting the Mexican Revolution.
Upon entering the theater, you can appreciate a spacious and bright lobby with marble floors and a main staircase leading to the main hall. The hall, with a capacity for over 800 people, is designed in a horseshoe shape, following the tradition of Italian theaters. The boxes and balconies are decorated with golden details and velvet curtains, creating a sophisticated and welcoming ambiance.
The theater has several peculiarities; upon passing through the traditional entrance portico characteristic of 19th-century buildings, you reach an open courtyard dominated by a beautiful neoclassical façade rich in ornamentation, where its curved walls manifest the horseshoe shape of the hall.
Regarding the structure of the hall, the balconies, proscenium, stage, plafond, and structure were made of wood with neoclassical parapets and cornices. The cast iron balcony work, locally cast, has complete transparency to address ventilation issues. Private boxes, as seen in theaters in the central part of the country, are not present due to the transparency criterion. This allowed the theater to have a cross-ventilation system through doors and windows with wooden grilles and a central lantern that functioned as an injection and absorption system for air renewal.
