Plazuela Machado
From its origins, it was called Machado Square, Plaza de Armas, or Main Square. On this site were the plots owned by Juan Nepomuceno Machado and Antonio Miranda Palacio. They decided to fill in the lagoon that was there, and even Doña Tomasa Osuna contributed a significant amount for this purpose to formalize the square. Originally, an esplanade was built in the square, surrounded by 36 magnificent stone benches and lush orange trees. For this reason, it was once called "The Orange Tree Promenade." In 1868, while in Europe, Federico Reynaud was commissioned to acquire 20 iron sofas to be placed in Machado Square.
This square is one of the oldest in Mazatlán, with historical records indicating that it was built in 1837 with the support of a wealthy merchant in silver, fabrics, and pearls, Don Juan Nepomuceno Machado.
It wasn't until 1881 that the square was remodeled, and a distinctive addition was made: the central kiosk that it still has today. It was General Bernardo Reyes, head of the military forces in Sinaloa, who provided the square with an iron kiosk. During the American and French occupations, the square's bands played from this same kiosk.
Plazuela Machado is now the center of the city's cultural life. It resonates with history, with echoes of a past filled with grandeur among its facades, doorways, porticos, and lintels.
The plazuela is one of the venues for Carnival celebrations. Every year, it hosts a gastronomic showcase featuring the best and most representative local restaurants that offer their dishes. The square also regularly hosts art exhibitions, book fairs, and a wide range of cultural and political events. On weekends, local artists and artisans set up small stalls, adding to the lively atmosphere.
